Background of the study
Digital discourse on social media platforms is reconfiguring the way meanings are constructed and shared. In Nigeria, Facebook and Twitter serve as major hubs where users generate semantic networks that reflect both traditional and innovative interpretations of language. Facebook allows for extended narratives and community discussions, leading to the development of rich semantic webs, while Twitter’s brevity fosters rapid exchanges that condense complex ideas into succinct messages (Okafor, 2023). This study investigates how digital discourse on these platforms contributes to the evolution of semantic networks in Nigerian language. By comparing the semantic patterns emerging on Facebook and Twitter, the research aims to uncover how users negotiate meaning, develop shared symbols, and create new definitions within online communities. The study considers factors such as context, audience, and cultural influences that shape semantic interpretations. This exploration of semantic networks not only highlights the dynamic nature of digital communication but also underscores the role of social media in transforming language use (Adebayo, 2024). The findings are expected to enrich our understanding of meaning-making processes in digital environments and provide insights into the ongoing evolution of Nigerian language in the context of new media.
Statement of the problem
While digital discourse is known to influence semantic networks, there is limited research on how this phenomenon manifests on different social media platforms in Nigeria. Existing studies have often examined Facebook and Twitter in isolation, failing to provide a comparative analysis of their semantic impacts (Chukwu, 2023). This gap restricts our understanding of the unique ways each platform contributes to language change and the formation of meaning. Without a systematic exploration, the influence of digital discourse on Nigerian semantic networks remains poorly defined, hindering the development of comprehensive theoretical models in digital linguistics (Ibrahim, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of semantic network formation on Facebook and Twitter in Nigeria. The research will benefit linguists, communication theorists, and digital media practitioners by elucidating the processes of meaning-making in digital contexts, thereby contributing to broader discussions on language evolution (Okafor, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing digital discourse on Facebook and Twitter among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline communication, ensuring a focused examination of the specified phenomenon.
